Want your Facebook posts to perform better? Play by the rules!
Why Facebook Only Works Within a Set of Rules
Facebook’s algorithm isn’t random—it follows a strict set of rules to prioritize content that keeps users engaged on the platform. If you post without understanding these rules, your content will get buried, no matter how good it is. Facebook favors high-quality, interactive posts over random or overly promotional content. It limits reach on posts with too many links, penalizes engagement bait, and prioritizes video over static images. Consistency, timing, and strategic planning are key—if you don’t post the right way, the algorithm won’t push your content to your audience. To succeed, you must play by the rules, ensuring your posts are engaging, valuable, and designed for maximum visibility.
Things the Algorithm Will NOT Let You Do
🚫 The algorithm is NOT your friend if you:
- Post links too often. Facebook hates external links and reduces their reach.
- Use engagement bait. “Like if you’re happy, comment if you’re sad” will get you penalized.
- Post too frequently. Flooding your page can actually decrease reach.
- Post only promotional content. Facebook wants engagement, not ads.
- Use banned words. Words like “giveaway,” “free,” and “contest” can trigger lower reach.
- Ignore engagement. If people comment and you don’t respond, your posts get pushed down.
- Post clickbait headlines. Facebook demotes posts that mislead users.
- Use too much text in images. Facebook prefers minimal text in visuals.
- Repeat the same content. Duplicate posts = algorithm punishment.
- Spam groups with links. Facebook detects spammy behavior fast.
- Post low-quality videos. Facebook prioritizes native, high-quality video content.
- Use only static images. The algorithm favors Reels and video over plain images.
- Overuse hashtags. Unlike Instagram, too many hashtags can hurt reach on Facebook.
✅ What Facebook LOVES:
- Native content (uploaded directly to Facebook).
- Conversations and real engagement.
- Video content, especially Reels.
The algorithm is picky! If you use the wrong type of images, your reach will suffer. Here’s what NOT to post:
1️⃣ Text-Heavy Images
- Facebook hates images with too much text.
- Ads with excessive text get lower reach or rejected.
- Keep text minimal—use captions instead!
2️⃣ Low-Quality or Blurry Images
- Grainy, pixelated, or stretched images = algorithm demotion.
- High-quality, clear visuals perform better.
3️⃣ Stock Photos That Look Too Generic
- Facebook favors original content over obvious stock images.
- Real-life, authentic photos drive more engagement.
4️⃣ Watermarked or Copyrighted Images
- Facebook may reduce visibility or flag your post.
- Use royalty-free or original images.
5️⃣ Inappropriate or Controversial Images
- No violence, nudity, or hate speech—your post will be removed.
- Even borderline content can get shadow banned.
6️⃣ Clickbait or Misleading Images
- If the image doesn’t match the post, Facebook punishes it.
- Avoid exaggerated claims or shocking visuals.
7️⃣ Overly Edited or Filtered Photos
- Extreme filters look fake and reduce trust.
- Natural, high-quality images work best.
8️⃣ Too Many Logos or Branded Graphics
- Facebook prefers organic-looking images.
- Subtle branding works better than logos everywhere.
