The New Reality of Marketing Your Business Online
For a new business entering the market today, being online is no longer a question of whether you should have a website or a Facebook page. Your digital presence has become part of the business itself. Before a potential customer ever contacts you, they may have searched for you, looked at your website, read your reviews, seen your social media, asked an AI platform about your services or compared you with three of your competitors. The first impression of your business is increasingly being formed before you have had an opportunity to introduce yourself.
Search is no longer confined to Google
What has changed most significantly is the way people discover businesses. Social platforms have become discovery and search environments in their own right, while AI is increasingly being used to research businesses, compare options and answer questions that previously required several separate searches. In South Africa, this shift is already visible in the growing integration of AI into marketing and the movement towards social and AI-driven discovery.
For a new business, this creates both an enormous opportunity and a serious responsibility. It is no longer enough to simply produce content or pay for advertising. Your business needs a coherent digital identity. Your website, social media, reviews, business listings and published information should accurately explain who you are, what you do, who you serve and why someone should trust you. This matters even more as AI systems increasingly draw information from the wider web when forming answers about businesses. There are already examples of inaccurate AI-generated business information causing reputational problems for small businesses.
At the same time, I believe we need to be careful about becoming so focused on technology that we forget the purpose of marketing in the first place. AI can help us research, analyse, automate and communicate at a scale that was previously impossible for a small business. It can make a good business more efficient and more visible, but it cannot compensate for a business that does not understand its customers or deliver what it promises.
The Starting Point Should Not Be Marketing.
It should be the business itself. Before I market and position a business, I want to understand how it operates, where it is losing efficiency, how it serves its customers and whether its message reflects the value it actually provides. I evaluate, I realign, I improve, and then I market and position.
The businesses that will stand out in the coming years will not necessarily be those with the biggest advertising budgets. They will be the businesses that understand how to combine sound business fundamentals with intelligent use of technology while retaining something increasingly valuable in a world of AI-generated content: authenticity, credibility and genuine human connection.
